Since opening in 1964, the Indianapolis Zoo has emerged as a world-class facility hosting more than a million visitors each year, including a record 1.24 million in 2014. The 64-acre campus is home to nearly 1,400 animals and 31,000 plants, including many threatened and endangered species. The Zoo has also become a global leader in animal conservation and research. Funding from the Indianapolis Zoo also supports the efforts of animal conservation organizations around the globe.​
